Subject: Region 5 Director (elect) - A word of Thanks!

To all members of the AMYA's Region 5 area,

I would like to take this opportunity to Thank everyone, whether you VOTED for me or not is not the issue, but that you got involved to prove that the system works! I had said from the very beginning that my first goal was to get more Voters out this year than years past and show that you do have a voice. With your help my first goal has been met....Thank you for the effort!

Just yesterday alone my Inbox for my e-mails had received over 45 e-mails of Congratulations from not only Region 5 members, but also from other Regions all around the United States including Canada. But it was the support and confidence that you, the sailors of Region 5 that made this possible. With your Vote of confidence I go on now to accept this office of AMYA's REGION 5 DIRECTOR for the next 2 years starting on January 1st, 2010. In the next few months I hope to assemble a Team of Associates throughout the Region to be my ears and eyes back to me. This will be the beginning of my Communication and Accessibility for the Region. No matter what Class you sail, I want everyone to know that my e-mail address is well publicized and open to all. Please feel free to contact me or suggest anything.

I would also like to take this opportunity to Thank the two guys that had the most confidence in me and my ability to follow through free of any partisan ties.....Mr Brig North of Dallas and Mr. Mike Eades of Arizona. These two guys also worked feverishly to get all the proper paperwork and nominations done on time on my behave. And not just stopping there but continuing their campaigning for me on various website forums and with their own Clubs. I owe these guys a huge Thank You!

Last but not least, I would like to Thank Mr John Hanks III for so many years of service as Region 5 Director and representing this Region. John's working knowledge and experience with the AMYA's will be greatly appreciated and sought after by myself from time to time if needed. Not only during this transitional period in the next few months, but for years to come. John's involvement with the AMYA will continue as Executive Secretary under the current AMYA's President Pete Maxson. With John's years of service to the AMYA, I know I will have my hands full just filling his shoes for Region 5 Director.

Looking towards the future, Please trust in me that I intend to have an open line of Communication with others through the website created by Mr Eric Gregory of San Antonio named   www.R5racing.com . This site will be my avenue to communicate and try to keep everyone in Region 5 abreast of any developments within the AMYA. This site is now being duplicated throughout other Regions for the exact same reasons. As the year goes on please refer to this site from time to time as well as the AMYA Bulletin, published by Dave Brawner (Region 2 Director). The AMYA Bulletin can be received via e-mail free by subscribing on the AMYA's new website www.theamya.org  on the lower left corner of the Homepage.

Thanks you again for letting me represent you the sailors of Region 5!

Good Winds......Ray Seta - San Antonio, Texas

All Skippers are welcome, and all will be included in the scoring process, however final results awards will only be presented to members in good standing of the American Model Yachting Association. That is to say, we wish to attract the participation of Star 45 Skippers, whether or not they are current members of AMYA. Also, we hope that once non-members become involved they will recognize the valuable benefits of AMYA membership.

See you at the Regatta!
Kindest regards,

It has become a tradition now at R5Racing.com to offer candidates for the AMYA Region 5 Directorship an impartial forum in which to introduce themselves.  This year we are pleased to have two fine gentlemen running for the position.  First is the incumbent Mr. John Hanks III who has served as Region 5 Director faithfully now for 7 years.  The challenger is the ever popular Mr. Ray Seta, Commodore of the Woodlawn Sailing Club in San Antonio, TX.  -  Eric Gregory, R5Racing.com

~ Mr. John T. Hanks III  ~

I am John T. Hanks lll and I am seeking your support for the position of  Region 5 Director.  I am the current Region 5 Director and have held that position continuously since 1996. This has given me a great deal of experience on the Board of Directors of the AMYA. I have had the pleasure of serving under the leadership of 3 different Presidents; Jack Gregory, Dick Rutledge and currently Pete Maxson. Through the years I have voted on many serious issues that affected the membership as a whole and I do not take that responsibility lightly. I have also resolved many issues over the years that were confined to Region 5 and did not require the any action from the AMYA Board of Directors.

Ray has put forth a platform of “ Communication, Accountability and Accessability”. I submit that these have always been available to the Region 5 membership. The biggest issue currently presented by the opposition to the current administration is openness of communication. Based on their comments they would like to see every thing that the Board of Directors do on the web for all to see regardless of the issue. The reality is that the managing of the AMYA is the running of a business pure and simple. The aim of the business is to encourage and grow the hobby and sport of model yachting. While the focus of the AMYA is a hobby, it needs to be run as a business in order to be successful. As a business, issues arise that should not be made public, these include personnel as well as financial issues. I do not know of a member who would like their private dealings made public.

As the Region 5 Director all of the membership in the region trusts me to represent their interests and to do the best job possible for the AMYA. To do other wise would violate that trust. Ray Seta’s supporters seem to feel that because Texas has the largest number of skippers in the Region then the Region 5 Director should be from Texas. To me that is a very narrow view of the Region and does a disservice to the other skippers who do not reside in Texas. I have had two Associate Directors in place in Texas for some time to increase  access in the area. They have been available to any AMYA member who wished to present an issue to the AMYA via email, phone or snail mail. The ability to easily access your Region 5 Representative has always been there and will continue to be there as long as I am the Region 5 Director.

Region 5 is by far the most diverse Region in the AMYA In addition to the eight states in the continental U.S., Region 5 represents, at the present time, thirteen foreign countries world wide and Puerto Rico. As you can see there is much more to Region 5 than Texas. While Texas is the largest state in both area and membership population it is no more or less important than the other seven states and foreign countries in the Region. I have always supported and will continue to support all of the skippers in Region 5 regardless of where they are from.

The bottom line is who will be there consistently for the membership and AMYA? While not as flamboyant as Ray I have always been there and always will be to make the hard and some times unpopular and uncomfortable decisions that need to be made to ensure the success of the AMYA.

Thank you in advance for your support in my quest to remain your Region 5 Director.

I urge you to vote in the upcoming election. Regardless of your choice of candidate your vote is vital to the determination of the Region 5 Representative. Please vote. John T. Hanks lll

~ Mr. Ray Seta ~

Dear Members of AMYA’s Region 5 ,

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ray Seta (AMYA’s # 8640) of San Antonio, TX, Member and Commodore of the Woodlawn Sailing Club (AMYA #112). I am proud to announce that I will be running for election for the position of AMYA’s REGION 5 DIRECTORSHIP this coming September.

I will attempt to list a few of my qualifications, intentions, and maybe a brief statement or two below as they pertain and may be relevant to my quest for future of the AMYA.

I’ve been sailing my whole life! Racing everything from small dinghies, to ultra-fast Catamarans, to full racing Keelboats, and onto Radio Control Sailing/Racing for the past 13 years. I have been a Member of US SAILING for the past 30 yrs and a member of the AMYA for 10 yrs. I have been Commodore of the Woodlawn Sailing Club for now 15 years, and given my good health it seems the members of WSC vow to keep their promise of always re-electing me till I die! I have held offices in many Sailing Class Association that I was intensively racing in at the time. I have been previously certified as a US SAILING Judge and Senior Race Officer. And because I have participated in many Charitable, Promotional, and Educational types of events with respect to Radio Control Sailing I feel I have a very good working knowledge of the ways to help, promote, and continue the positive growth of Radio Control Sailing and the AMYA. I feel that feedback and communication is the key for representing a Region. I don’t feel that my opinion or agenda is always the right one and fits the needs of members of the Region unless I have actively sought and heard their opinions first. I don’t feel that a Region Director represents himself. He should represent all members/clubs/classes that reside in that Region. This can only be done through communication and feedback. What I have seen and observer over the past few years is an AMYA Board of Directors fighting and bickering over issues with self intentions and agendas bases on their own opinion’s/agenda’s  and not the members of their respected Regional Members/Clubs. I feel a lot of this stems from whatever Class of boat they may sail or an agenda that favors that Class. The last time I thought about it , I feel that Regional Director’s should communicate with everyone in that REGION regardless of what Class of boat those members or clubs promote and sail.

I have been asked recently through a public Forum post what’s my position, my agenda, my platform, or my outlook for the AMYA for the future. Quite simple….represent REGION 5’s members through the following simple intention. To establish my C-A2 (C-A-squared) Campaign :

COMMUNICATION - I first plan on introducing myself to as many Region 5 AMYA Members as possible through one carefully picked website (R5racing.com). This site is completely neutral site with no agenda other than to inform and feed information to members of Region 5. My  e-mail address will be posted for all to be able to contact me at any time.

ACCOUNTABLITY - I plan on pushing this onto the AMYA Staff & Board of Directors as one of my most important aspects of gaining back the confidence of it’s members of the AMYA. I have seen far to many times that the AMYA’s staff  will request information from Club’s and it’s members, only to never see it followed through for publication or posting on the AMYA’s website. I won’t even address the financial aspect of the AMYA here today….but a public balanced budget is always a priority.

ACCESSABILTY – Through Communication and Accountability I intend in given every member of Region 5 a voice in the system. I want everyone to feel they can approach me as well as the AMYA Board of Directors and feel they have a voice to share their opinions and concerns.

In short I would like to say that I do not represent any Party in my political life, yet I never miss an opportunity to Vote. I will not be a part of an intended slate of officers in the hopes of gaining endorsements or support from any one or groups of individuals. I will not be part of any one Class discussion group with any intentions of pushing an agenda through the AMYA. I will not take part in any lobby(ing) from any group or Class to again further push an agenda through. I will represent the sailors and members of Region 5 as an individual voice and promise to Vote with their consensus and confidence in mind at all time. I will stick to and stand behind my simple intentions of my CA2 policy.

In closing I would like to Thank the two gentlemen that encouraged me to run for this office, namely Mr. Brigham North of Dallas Texas, and Mr. Mike Eades of Arizona. It has been almost a year of discussions between all of us, and I must say the excitement of their nomination letters published in the Model Yachting magazine has given me a new found encouragement. I also would like to Thanks Mr. John Hanks III for many years of service in so many capacities with the AMYA. I have had the pleasure of working with John, via e-mails and phone calls, and it has always been a positive experience working toward a proper outcome. One thing I would like to ask every member of Region 5, that whether you Vote for me or Mr. John Hanks III doesn’t matter, What matters is that you participate in the system by Voting. I personally would like to see this year’s election be one of the best turnout of Votes ever seen here in Region 5. Please mark those ballots, send them in before the posted date. This will be the start of the confidence building I have in mind regardless of the winner!

And for all of you who might already know me and my reputation and exploits at many out of town or even local San Antonio regatta. I make no apologies…they are all true! Except the stories of an exploit in Tijuana, Mexico in 2006 on our way to a Nationals….I will deny those stories, even if there was video!

REGION 5 Website for promotion of Region wide Racing Circuits

On behalf of Eric Gregory of San Antonio, Texas, I would like to take this moment to announce the release of a new WEBSITE called  www.R5Racing.com . This site has been in the development stage for almost a year now but with the addition of a new baby skipper in the house, the release of the site was postponed for further tweaking. This new sight will be a supplement to all current Club’s sites. It will also be an additional site for further advertising of any upcoming listed Class Regattas within AMYA’s Region 5 area. With the sole purpose of providing web links back to your Club’s website, it will also serve as direct link for anyone to navigate to any of the listed Class sites and resources. It can also serve as a minimal website for Clubs that currently do not have it’s own established website as a means to advertise any up coming events of any of the Classes listed, limited to Notices of Race (NOR). The success of this site will be totally contingent on the participation of the Club’s Commodores, Members, and Regatta Organizers to submit their relevant information and Club’s website links, via e-mail to Eric Gregory (Webmaster). Any Regatta may be advertised either by linking back to your Club’s website or specific NOR, limited to AMYA’s Classes. It can also be used as an additional site for posting links for Stories & Results after an event.

This site should benefit all Region 5 Clubs by getting the word out of their Existence, Locations, Classes Primarily Raced in that club, Yahoo Groups, Contacts, and Club’s websites. Anyone visiting this site from out of Region 5 should be able to obtain all information needed on the activities of Established and/or Up and Coming Racing Circuits. Currently established Region 5 wide  Racing Circuits consist of Victoria, Internationals One Meter (IOM), Star 45, and Seawind with regattas held annually in most major cities. But this site can/will help other Classes promote and established a possible Racing circuit of their own through it’s own due diligence and the use of this site.

The R5Racing.com site will also have an Advisory Committee consisting of individuals from major cities throughout the Region 5. This committee will be available to review any ideas, suggestions, or comments submitted by anyone through the year. Please feel free to participate by going to the link and submitting ideas and comments, as well as your links. The Moderator of this site will only maintain this site and not necessarily go searching for your Club’s information. Please also understand that this is “work in progress”, ever changing type site. So if something is missing please let the Webmaster(Eric) know. With your help, this is the only way to keep your information current and up to date.

So please help us spread the word on this great new site that Mr. Gregory has established by sending this link and website address,  www.R5Racing.com  to everyone you can think of and your Club’s website.
